What Are Tics?

Tics are sudden, repetitive, non-rhythmic movements or sounds. Motor tics involve body movements (eye blinking, head jerking, shoulder shrugging). Vocal tics involve sounds (throat clearing, sniffing, words). Most children with tics have a provisional tic disorder that resolves within a year.

Tourette Syndrome

Tourette syndrome is diagnosed when a child has had both motor and vocal tics for more than one year, with onset before age 18. It is frequently associated with ADHD and OCD. With proper management, most children with Tourette syndrome lead full, productive lives.

When to Seek Treatment

Many children with mild tics do not require medication. Treatment is indicated when tics cause pain, interfere with daily activities, affect school performance, or cause significant social distress. The goal is improved quality of life, not necessarily elimination of all tics.

Treatment Options
